Study in Lithuania

Experts in laser technologies, medicine, information and biotechnologies, architects and artists have been promoting Lithuania abroad for quite some time now. Many professionals have accumulated their knowledge in the higher education institutions of our country. Lithuania is a crossroad between Western and Eastern Europe, and despite its complicated history, has developed a unique culture, which encompasses both deep respect for traditions and a robust wish to learn and innovate. The population of foreign students keeps rising – in 2015, 12% more students came to study in Lithuania (4652 in total). Another few thousand students come to study under various student Exchange programmes. According to surveys, 94.2% of foreign students would recommend studying in Lithuania to their friends. Currently there are students from 95 different countries of the world studying in Lithuania. The majority of foreign students choose the Lithuanian University of Health Sciences. Presently as many as 734 foreign students study in this university, the majority of them from Sweden (116) and Israel (111). Many foreign students choose Kaunas University of Technology (549), Vilnius Gediminas Technical University, (445), Vilnius university (415), Mykolas Romeris University (364) and European Humanities University where the majority of foreigners come from Belarus. In 2015, as in previous years, medicine was the most popular study programme. Other study programs such as engineering, management and social work are also popular among foreign students. Higher Education System is like the higher education institutions are of two types: universities and colleges (non-university higher education institutions). Studies are organized in three cycles: bachelor studies (in universities) or professional bachelor studies (in colleges), post-graduate studies and doctoral studies. Full-time and part-time studies are available.

Study programmes

College studies (non-university higher education) are oriented towards training for professional activities. The duration of full-time studies in colleges is usually three years and for part-time studies – four years. Practical training covers at least one third of the study programme. Graduates are awarded with a professional bachelor degree. Students with practical experience can complete additional studies (the duration of which is set by each higher education institution) to continue post-graduate studies in universities. College studies are offered by public and private colleges.

University studies provide a universal academic education, theoretical training and the highest level of professional excellence. The form of university studies can be continuous, for example, in medicine the first and the second cycles are connected. The duration of full-time studies in universities is four years and for part-time studies it is often five years. Graduates are awarded with a bachelor degree. They can continue their studies in post-graduate studies that last one and a half to 2 years. Those who want to dedicate themselves to academic activities after post-graduate studies can study for a doctoral degree (the duration of studies is four years). University studies are offered by universities, academies and seminaries.

22 colleges (including 10 independent) and 21 universities (including 8 independent) offer study programmes in Lithuania.

Entry Requirements: For the pre-Masters courses, typical entry requirements are at least 3 years of higher education and UKVI IELTS 5.5 (minimum of 5.0 in all skills).

If you do not meet the English language entry level but have at let UKVI IELTS 4.5 (minimum 4.0 in all skills) you can do a course that includes extended English and skills (EES).

Intake: Students may be able to start in spring (January – April), summer (May – August) or autumn (September – November)

Tuition Fees

Average tuition fees in higher education institutions depend on the field of study and the study cycle. On average, the cost of studies at higher education institutions is approximately between 1.000 – 5.300 EUR per year for bachelor studies, from 2.200 to 6.500 EUR per year for master studies and from 7.100 to 8.500 EUR per year for doctoral studies.

With higher education being notoriously expensive in most parts of the world, more than three-fourths of international students in Lithuania agree they are getting a bang for their buck – with reasonable tuition fees for the highest quality of studies and generous scholarship schemes for top quality education.

Bachelor's Degree

3 years (180 ECTS credits) towards a professional bachelor or an academic bachelor. Offers students core teaching in the chosen discipline, as well as a broad general education. The academic bachelor gives access to master's studies.

Master's Degree

1 or 2 years (60 or 120 ECTS credits). Provides specialized content whilst allowing for further development of the scientific research process.

After obtaining a Master's degree, students can choose to pursue research projects leading to a Doctorate degree (PhD). PhD's are only awarded by Universities.

The Bologna System also uses the European Credit Transfer System (ECTS) to measure higher education credits.

Admission

Students apply directly to the educational institution of their choice. Applications for Bachelor education generally need to have completed secondary education. To be admitted to a Master program, the applicant generally must have completed a Bachelor Degree.

Scholarships

There are various scholarship opportunities in Lithuania. Scholarships are offered by the state, higher education institutions and International Scholarship Programs. Each higher education institution also has its own scholarship funds and financing schemes based on which one-time awards or other type of awards are given to the students meeting certain requirements from institution’s funds. Lithuanians living abroad and expatriates (children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren of expatriates who had lived abroad for more than three years and started studying in at least in the ninth grade in Lithuania ). This scholarship is granted for one semester, including holidays.

Monthly expenses

Most foreign students say that 350-400 EUR is enough to live off for a month (minus the tuition fees). It really depends on how much you want to travel and go out, but our night clubs, pubs, museums and other attractions are less expensive than the ones found elsewhere in Europe. A day menu at most restaurants will cost from 3 to 5 EUR, a cinema ticket – up to 6 EUR, ten minutes at a local carting track – 10-12 EUR.

Recognition of foreign qualifications

Candidates to Lithuanian higher education institutions who have received their secondary or higher education abroad should arrange for the academic recognition of foreign qualifications. Academic recognition means determining the value of the qualifications, i. e. if these qualifications generally meet with the requirements of relevant qualifications in Lithuania from the academic point of view. Academic recognition of foreign qualifications is undertaken by the centre of Quality Assessment in Higher Education (SKVC) and higher education institutions holding the authorization of the Minister of Education and Science in Lithuania. Get a Permit

If you are from the European Union, the European Economic Area or Switzerland and want to work in Lithuania, you will not need any permit. You will only be required to fill out a specific form to legalize your stay in our country. If you are not a citizen of the European Union and intend to work in Lithuania, you will have to obtain a work permit. This should be done before your arrival in Lithuania.

If you want to be sure that your profession or occupation is recognized in Lithuania, consult the list of regulated professions. It includes all the professions regulated by each EU country.

You are also recommended to check if you need a residence permit.

A temporary residence permit is document entitling an alien to a temporary residence in the Republic of Lithuania for the period specified therein. The permit for a temporary residence in our country is issued to non-EU citizens.

Permanent residence permit is granted to those who intend to permanently reside in Lithuania and who have confirmed the status of a permanent resident alien. This permit is issued for a period of five years.

EU Citizens

Citizens of the European Union, the European Economic Area or Switzerland willing to work in Lithuania, are not required to have any work permit, as provided by the European Parliament and Council Regulation (EC). 562/200615 March 2006.

Citizens of the European Union Member States and their family members, who come to Lithuania for more than three months over a period of half a year, and who are in compliance with at least one of the requirements specified in Article 101(1) of the Law on the Legal Status of Foreigners, are issued a certificate confirming their legitimate residence, as approved by the Minister of Interior.

Citizens of the member states of the European Free Trade Association are subject to the same provisions as in case of the European Union Member States. European Union citizen‘s family members who are not citizens of the Union are issued EU family member‘s residence cards.

Non-EU Citizens

Non-EU citizens willing to work in Lithuania must obtain a work permit. This should be done before coming to Lithuania, unless a foreigner is relieved from this obligation (for more information - the Law on the Legal Status of Aliens).

A work permit is issued to foreigners for a period of up to two years. The permit specifies a company, institution or organization employing the individual as well as the position taken. Other terms and conditions apply in case of seasonal work or internship.

Conditions and procedure for issuing a work permit to an alien have been set forth by the Minister of Social Security and Labour in consultation with the Minister of the Interior (a work permit shall be issued to an alien and withdrawn by the Labour Exchange of Lithuania under the Ministry of Social Security and Labour of the Republic of Lithuania; the application shall be processed within two months from the date of receipt of the application).

A work permit may be issued to a foreign national, if Lithuania has no professional that would meet employer's requirements.

An alien who applies for a high-skilled qualification job, shall be issued a decision by the Lithuanian Labour Exchange confirming its compliance with the needs of the Lithuanian labour market. Decision to issue (replace) the temporary residence permit to an alien who intends to engage in a job requiring high professional qualifications (EU Blue Card) is adopted by the Migration Department.

Visa

Foreign students from outside of the EU coming to Lithuania to study for one or two semesters need a residence permit. They can obtain one prior to departure at the Lithuanian embassy in their home country. You can find your closest embassy through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Lithuania.
